MÉDARD TYTGAT (1871-1948): IN HANDCUFFS

MÉDARD TYTGAT (1871-1948): IN HANDCUFFS

Oil on canvas, 1902, signed 'M. Tytgat', dated and indistinctly inscribed lower right, lined. 50 x 36 in., 51 x 38 in. (frame). Note: Médard Tytgat was a Belgian painter, lithographer and book illustrator. The subject of this painting is atypical for Tytgat who, for the most part, favored buccolic park scenes and portraits of women. The model in this painting is anonymous, however, it has been suggested that the subject is a representation of Alfred Dreyfus. The Dreyfus Affair was a political and social scandal that divided France from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. Tytgat would have been aware of the scandal and perhaps chose to paint this portrait as a commentary.

Condition:Lined; cracquelure throughout; areas of inpainting - mostly in the hair and the pants.

Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500
