Note: Welsh painter Gwendoline John spent most of her career in France, moving to Paris in 1903 after studying at the Slade School of Art in London, the only art school to allow female students at the time. Much of her oeuvre focuses on portraits of women, including many self-portraits. John was little-known during her lifetime, overshadowed by her painter-brother, Augustus John, and August Rodin, with whom she had a relationship. John was a progressive thinker who used her art to explore her own identity as well as to support the idea of independence and education for women.
