FRENCH GILT-METAL AND BLACK MARBLE GRAND TOUR OBELISK

FRENCH GILT-METAL AND BLACK MARBLE GRAND TOUR OBELISK

The stem with hieroglyphs, the base inscribed, "Louis Philippe I...MDCCCXXXVI" with gated base and black marble stand. Note: A reduction of what is best known as the Luxor obelisk, the original originally stood with its twin (still in situ) at the entrance of the Temple at Luxor. Standing about 75 feet high, and carved from yellow granite, the hieroglyphic inscriptions trumpet the successes of the Great Pharaoh Rameses II (1279-1212 B.C.). Given to France by Egypt in 1826, it was erected in the Place de la Concorde (on the spot where the Guillotine had stood) by King Louis Philippe on October 26, 1836. 32 1/2 x 8 1/4 x 8 1/4 in.
